Blessing of the Pets and St. Francis Day
Posted: 10/4/2017

Every year on October 4th, we honor the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals and ecology.  St. Francis Day is one of the most anticipated days of the year for the students as it always begins with the “Blessing of the Pets.”  The students bring their pet dogs, cats, birds, snakes, hamsters, fish, lizards, gerbils, etc. to school where the day begins with an outdoor prayer service followed by a special blessing for the animals.  Later in the day, students in grades kindergarten through seventh add plants to their respective gardens, while also sprucing up the lawns in the area immediately surrounding the school and church.    These activities communicate to the students the importance of caring for God’s creatures and of being good stewards of the Earth we all share.
